Awards are dear to musicians just the same way a promotion may mean everything to a hardworking employee. However, awards are known to generate negative reactions from the public, especially, when they feel that they were given to the undeserving persons. The same situation happened last night when The Mdundo Awards that went down last evening from 5pm at the Sarit Center decided to award Timmy T Dat as the most downloaded hip-hop artiste of the year. This came, as a shocker to Kenyans who expressed their disapproval of Timmy as a hip-hop artiste and said Khaligraph would have been a better choice. Surely who doesn’t know Timmy is not an hip-hop artist? The organizers of the event completely erred. Here are some of the reactions from the public.
This is what Kenyans had to say:
@jobless millionaire
Mdundo music point of correction dus nyau is nothing close to hip hop. Get the facts right.
@bugijay7
In other news dus nyau ni hiphop. #mdundoawards
@staroarkenya
#mdundoawards something is fishy. How come Timmy won in hip hop downloads while this ninja is not doing hip hop music.
@amtinnie
#mdundoawards Timmy does hip hop? So now Papa Jones sings ohangla, kubebwa kimalala.
The awards started in 2015 making this their third edition and the entry was absolutely free. Mdundo is an online music distributor and they therefore prize the most downloaded Kenyan music in different categories. Their stage this year was set by Protel Studios.
The other award winning artistes included Sauti Sol who won the most downloaded afro pop artiste in Kenya for the year 2016. They later took to twitter to thank mdundo music for the amazing award. The Gospel Eye congratulated their own gospel artistes Mercy Masika and Willy Paul for the awards they earned. Willy Paul won the most downloaded single while Mercy Masika took the most downloaded gospel artiste. She also clinched the most downloaded single of the year through her song Nikupendeze. And finally, the most downloaded group single went to Kymo and Stigah, the ever growing thitima duo.
