Times are changing as courses that used to be marketable in Kenya become useless. In 2009 some courses have proved to me more marketable than others as employers shift their focus from academic papers to technical skills.
If you are planning to enroll for a course in Kenya, ensure you do thorough background research. You might join a course and later discover that no employer wants to employ you despite scoring a distinction.
As you understand, most jobs require degree qualifications. It’s therefore important to note that when you pursue a diploma course, you must do exceptionally well for you to compete with degree holders. You also need a strong qualification to get noticed.
Venas News has sampled a list of courses employers believe are the most useful.
For people planning to join Kenyan universities, here are the hotcake diploma courses to pursue:
- Diploma In Estate Agency And Property Management
Diploma In Estate Agency And Property Management may not be appealing to most of us but those who have been in the real estate sector know how useful it is.
The real estate sector is booming and more professionals are needed. If you have professional skills in real estate management and you incorporate your agency, you’ll never read wealth in books but you’ll feel it.
Property Managers in Kenya earn between Ksh90,000 to Ksh1 million. I know a couple of them who make upwards of Ksh 500,000 per month.
- Diploma in Hospitality Management
Another course that should be in your list is Diploma in Hospitality Management. This course, of course, is not for people seeking to be employed but those in need of skills to pursue their own interests. Cake baking is an amazing business to do in Kenya, especially in Nairobi where demand for cakes is on the rise. You can also start your own restaurant and make a kill.
With a diploma in Hospitality Management you won’t miss something to do for a living.
- Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology
Four years ago, when I was still a newbie in blogging, one of my friends asked me which course her daughter would pursue in college. After a careful thought, I advised her to go for a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology. What I had in mind is that the lady would complete school and become a pharmacist. True to my instructs, the lady is now a pharmacist and owns two chemists within Nairobi. Last year I visited her in one of the chemists. What I gathered is that she makes Ksh 10,000 to Ksh 30,000 per day—I am impressed up to now.
Diploma in Special Needs Education
Another course I would advise anyone to pursue is Diploma in Special Needs Education. There are several Special Needs schools in Kenya with few teachers qualifying to teach children with special needs.
Someone who has pursued Special Need Education is not an ordinary teacher. With these skills, one can make up to Ksh 500,000 per month.
You have two options as a special needs education teacher: start your own school or become a teacher of special needs children.
I have surveyed most schools in Nairobi and I can confirm that no school charges less than Ksh50,000 per term. Some schools charge up to Ksh 600,000 per term. If you are employed by these schools, your salary won’t go below Ksh 100,000.
- Diploma in Computer Engineering
If you are good in mathematics, physics and other sciences, prepare to pursue a diploma in computer engineering. Companies like Oracle, Safaricom and Google will come for you and the salary you will earn is crazy. For instance, Google pays a diploma holder in excess of Ksh 500,000 per month, there are also other benefits which are not disclosed to the public.
Even if you don’t get employed, you can start your own IT firm where you develop Apps and sell to corporations and individuals.
One example is my friend who did this diploma course and is supplying supermarkets with the systems they use to effect transactions in the counter. The guy makes Ksh 1 million in a bad month.
- Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering
You know, nowadays people are avoiding technical skills—everyone wants to be a manager. Companies now prefer graduates with Diploma qualification in electrical engineering over those with degree qualifications.
What amazes me most about this course is that even if companies don’t employ you, you can still employ yourself and make it in life.
- Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication
With the rise in demand for social media marketers, diploma in journalism and mass communication has come to be one of the hot cake courses in Kenya. A survey was conducted in 2018 and it was determined that 80% of the most successful journalists in Kenya have a qualification in Diploma in Jornalism. In fact, we realized that degree holders in this field perform dismally.
- Diploma in Monitoring & Evaluations
Everyone aspire to join NGO even in the lowest rank, but the gateway to the sector is through pursuing a relevant course. Fortunately, Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation comes in as the most favorable course.
Since most NGOs conduct research M&E ,coupled with skills in statistics, are the best qualifications to have for you to be an ideal candidate for NGO employees.
- Diploma In Purchasing And Supplies Management
We were seated somewhere in Nairobi and one of the people asked, “why are students rushing to pursue Diploma In Purchasing And Supplies Management despite possessing degree qualifications in other careers”. From the contributions of other members in that room, I came to realize that this course is rewarding.
One thing I discovered is that people want shortcuts and Diploma In Purchasing And Supplies Management exposes you to that.
One thing that makes me wonder why my life is stagnant is that I find a friend we qualified with who joined the government. The person is driving a V8 yet he is just a small person in the ministry. But what makes him fortunate is the fact that he is in the purchasing department.
- Diploma in Nursing
The last course in our list is Diploma in Nursing. Though I don’t like the money Nurses make,I am glad jobs are plenty for nurses. For people who don’t mind earning small money but securing their jobs, nursing is the best course to pursue.
