Prostitution can be a source of wealth, poverty, HIV or misery-it depends on how individuals practice it? Apparently, Uganda has more prostitutes than Kenya and Tanzania, but slightly less than Nigeria.
Latest figures show that in Kenya, a total of 50,000 prostitutes exist. While this number seems big, Uganda has even more, 60, 000, while Tanzania has a total of 29,000 prostitutes.
In East Africa, Uganda is the leading, followed by Kenya. Tanzania has the least number of prostitutes.
In Kenya, the Kikuyu tribe leads with a total of 23,000 prostitutes, followed by Luo, Kisii, Luhya and Kamba respectively. The Kalenjin tribe has the least number of prostitutes among the big tribes in Kenya.
Kampala has the highest number of prostitutes followed by Nairobi.Dar es Salaam has the least number among major cities of East Africa.
While these cities dominate, towns located along the Kenya, Uganda borders have very high number of prostites.Such towns include Malaba and Busia
In Kenya, the average income of a prostitute is Ksh 40,000 per month while in Uganda,a prostitute collects Ush 300,000-Ush 1000,000 per month. In Tanzania, they make as low as Tsh 50,000 per month.
The profession, which is the oldest on earth, has evolved.Nowadays, prostitutes especially high class is referred to as socialites. This is where the likes of Vera Sidika fall.This class of people make up to $1,000 from a single client.
What’s interesting is that even university girls are practicing it.Also men have joined and are reaping big.
