List of 11 Colleges to Be Closed in Kenya

The government is set to close at least 11 colleges affiliated to Laikipia and Kisii Universities.

The decision to close the colleges was arrived after the Commission for University Education (CUE) established that they were operating without enough lecturers. Also, some of the campuses are located in areas not conducive for learning.

An independent investigations revealed that in some universities, Masters degree holders teach PhD students, which is unacceptable. The report further revealed that for instance, in the Eldoret campus of Kisii University, the School of Business and Economics has 78 doctorate students but only two PhD holders as teaching staff

“These two lecturers also teach the 266 master’s students. The explanation that was given was that the gaps are filled by either having master’s degree holders teaching PhD and masters students or by part-time lecturers. The lack of faculty staff at the campuses puts to question the quality of learning in these institutions”, the report read in parts.

Following the findings, the commission has recommended the closure of the following colleges:

Laikipia University Colleges:

  • Nairobi
  • Naivasha
  • Eldoret
  • Embu
  • Maralal
  • Laikipia

Kisii University

  • Isebania
  • Kehancha
  • Ravine
  • Keroka
  • Nyamira
  • Ogembo

The colleges will be closed in January 2016.
