Conmen are on the loose in Nairobi, today they are not using force to get into your pocket, they instead use a drug to sedate you. The incidents of residents being drugged in Nairobi are increasing by day, it’s now a worrying trend.
It all starts when a smartly dressed lady or gentleman approaches you, trying to seek for direction or simply selling a product like perfume. Then a gullible citizen would stand to listen to the stranger. The stranger will then get close to you while applying a drug on his/her hand. As the conversation gets interesting, he will extend a hand to thank you for helping her. If you make a mistake of greeting the stranger, you will lose your mind. At this time, the stranger will control you as you become extremely submissive-you will do everything he tells you.
The drug being used here is very powerful such that before the victim become conscious, 24 hours are over. It’s therefore more lethal than many drugs used during surgical operations.
The worst case happens when you are in a matatu home. Someone sitted next to you would want to reap where he did not sow.She will tell you he is selling cosmetics, in this case perfume. She will then ask you to sniff and determine whether it’s your taste. At this time she will quote low figure as the price for the perfume. Now, since you know the same goes for Ksh2,000 in a supermarket and the same goes for Ksh200 as per the seller, you will rush to sniff to confirm it has good scent. If you sniff it, you will be finished there and then.
In our homes they are there too. These people will come and spray their usual drug through the window. The drug will ensure you sleep for at least 12 hours as they break into your house and steal whatever they want. Once they spray, you become unconscious, helpless and half-dead; they can kill you if they wish.
A good example, from Wahome Thuku, reveals how an innocent lady was drugged in Ruiru. This is the lady’s story:
“LAST evening I received a very heartbreaking phone call from an old friend (who is reading). A 17-yr old girl was crossing the road near Family Bank in Ruiru Town, Kiambu at 11am when a lady approached her from behind, touched her and told her, “you look smart”.
Immediately the girl went into blackout and her world shut down.
When she regained consciousness yesterday at around 11am (24 hours later) she had been dumped on Kenyatta Road in the vicinity. She was dizzy, could now stand properly, couldn’t locate where she was or recall what had happened. She however managed to seek help and the family, who had been searching for her overnight traced her at the road. Medical exam revealed that she had been raped.
When the incidence was reported at Ruiru Police Station, the officers were not moved or amazed. According to them this was only one of many such incidents being reported there every other day (and probably not the last – my words). Its a syndicate in Ruiru town and the neighbourhood. And of course may happen elsewhere”
