Celebrated novelist and Nobel Prize winner, Wole Soyinka has burnt his American Green card, fulfilling his promise he made shortly before America’s presidential elections.
After destroying his green card, the 82-year-old said:
“I have already done it, I have disengaged (from the United States). I have done what I said I would do.
I had a horror of what is to come with Trump… I threw away the (green) card, and I have relocated, and I’m back to where I have always been.
It’s useful in many ways. I wouldn’t for one single moment discourage any Nigerians or anybody from acquiring a green card… but I have had enough of it.”
Soyinka has few days to leave America because he is now regarded as illegal immigrant. His home country, Nigeria awaits him after making true his promise.
The Nigerian has been living in USA for decades after he was released from jail in 1969.But his stay in America under Trump rule is not guaranteed: Trump had promised to show illegal immigrants the door.
