Despite the Kikuyu community dominating all sectors, it’s hard to find them working as watchmen or house help (maid) .There are underlying reasons behind this.
If you sample 10 watchmen, using random statistical sampling technique, you will find the following distribution:
- 4 Luhya
- 3Kisii
- 2Luo
- 1Kamba
If you move to another area and do sampling using stratified ,Poisson, stratified or systematic sampling, you will arrive at a similar ratio we have described above.
In another case, if you sample 20 house help/maid in any town, you will come up with this distribution:
- 7 Luhya
- 7Kamba
- 3Kisii
- 2Luo
- 1others
From the two separate samples, you will notice a kikuyu appears nowhere. Why? Here is the reason.
Before a Kikuyu is employed, he/she must analyze cost benefit analysis. For a kikuyu any employment he/she takes up must come with additional benefits other than the salary. A Kikuyu knows that being a watchman is a waste of time because he will get nothing extra unless he is told to guard G4S car.
A Kikuyu will not take up a job as a maid, she better works as waiter in a bar. She knows Ksh 5,000 per month minus additional income is a waste of time. If you manage to have a Kikuyu as your house help, then you must be paying her well and in addition she is getting some extra benefits without your knowledge.
Statistics show that Kikuyu men who take up security jobs never stay at the same position more than 6 months, they either quit or move to areas where there are more benefits. On the other hand, those who work as house helps prefer to work in posh estates like Runda, Karen, Kitisuru, Muthaiga and Kileleshwa where they are paid above Ksh 20,000 per month.
Because of these reasons, it has become increasingly easier for Kisiis Luos,Kamba and Luhya to secure positions in G4S,Wells Fargo and other security firms where Kikuyu tribe is hesitant to join. There is also a huge demand for house helps in major towns.
