The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has made a statement on what transpired before the Sachangwan accident occurred. In their statement, they have indicated it was not their fault but mistakes from a truck driver.
Kenyans have reacted angrily over this statement, saying the body MUST be disbanded. Here is the statement:
Earlier today, a crash involving several vehicles was said to have been caused by NTSA officers at Sachangwan area. Contrary to this report, our officers were not in pursuit of the truck that caused the crash.
Our team was undertaking their usual patrol in the area when they were alerted by hawkers that a speeding truck had lost control. In response to this, our officers boarded their vehicle, switched on the strobe lights and cleared the road. Those who heed to the call of the officers, managed to move off the road but unfortunately some oncoming vehicles were hit by the truck. As a result , 13 persons lost their lives. The effort of our team managed to prevent many more lives from being lost.
The Authority also notes a spike in road traffic crashes across the country.
Preliminary investigations into the cause of the crashes indicate that 90% of them were as a result of human related factors such as speeding, lane indiscipline, drunk driving among other factors.
We urge motorists to be extra vigilant during this festive season and observe traffic rules.
