It is normal to notice grey or white hair as you get older. This is because production of melanin cells which gives your hair colour becomes slow with age making the hair lose pigment. However, white hair may develop as early as 20 years of age because of various reasons.
We look at the possible causes and how to prevent white hair at an early age
Genetics
If you notice white hair unusually earlier say in your teen age or thereabout, then it is because of your genes. You may have inherited DNA of white hair from your parents, grandparents or great- grands. This is nature and we cannot do anything to prevent it. You will also pass on the genes of early hair greying to your off-springs, they pass on to their generation and the story continues.
Lack of Vitamin
Eating a balanced diet is essential for your health including hair growth. Reduced intake of vitamin (Vitamin B12) affects hair cells causing the hair to lose colour. You should at all times ensure to include vitamin in your diet obtained from foods such as milk, eggs, yoghurt, cheese, fish ,beef and poultry.
Drug Addiction
Addiction to harmful drugs such as alcohol and smoking may lead to whitening of hair at an early age. Adhere to a healthy life style and limit alcohol intake to prevent this.
Sudden Trauma
Emotional shock as a result of bad news such as accident, death or heartbreak may cause one to have grey hair. How we react to such news determines hair growth. If you mind your hair appearance, try to be gentle on yourself despite the weight of news if you can.
Stress
If your job involves a strict routine that requires a lot of thinking and meeting strict deadlines, you risk getting white hair earlier than usual! The same applies to students who are tensed about exams. How do you know if you have stress? Lack of sleep, anxiety, change in appetite and high blood pressure are an indicator of stress and what follows is change of hair colour! Strike a work-life balance and relax
Hair Products
Some hair products have chemicals which may be harmful to your hair in the long run. The prolonged use of certain hair relaxers, hair treatments, shampoos, hair dyes and soaps have cells damaging effect and lead to hair whitening. So be cautious while making sure your hair looks good.
Thyroid Disorder
Change in hormones caused by thyroid problems may also cause premature graying of hair. Thyroid gland found below the neck helps in metabolism. If it becomes overactive or underactive, it may lead to low production of melanin.it is advisable to seek medical attention in such a situation.
