Latest list of unemployed graduates is out. According to the list, Mount Kenya University has the most unemployed graduates, followed by Kenya Methodist University,MMUST, St Paul’s University and Kisii University, respectively.
The researcher who conducted the study found out that employers loathe Mount Kenya University graduates because they feel they don’t have the capacity to perform high demanding jobs. One of the major reasons why most graduates from the aforementioned universities aren’t employed is because their high school grade and college grades don’t compare—they are in total contract. For instance, a graduate of Bachelor of Commerce scored first class in undergraduate when his high school certificate indicated a D+.This leaves an employer with several question marks.
Another reason why St Paul’s University, Mount Kenya University and Kenya Methodist University graduates aren’t faring well in the job market is because most of them went for soft courses, or even if they pursued marketable courses, their performance in interviews didn’t match the expectations of interviewers. It’s sad that most of them answered interview questions in sheng!
It’s also surprising that most of these universities offer courses that aren’t in line with the job market. Take example of Bachelor of NGO management. What does this course aim to achieve? The name is fancy but the graduate won’t find anything useful to contribute to the management of NGO.I mean, this graduate lacks technical aspect of management.
Top ten universities with the most number of jobless graduates are as follows:
- Mount Kenya University
- Paul’s University
- Kisii University
- Kenya Methodist University
- Pwani University
- Moi University
- Kenyatta University
- Meru University
- Masinde Muliro University of Agriculture and Technology
- Gretsa University
Universities with the highest number of employed graduates
- University of Nairobi
- Maseno University
- JKUAT
- Strathmore University
- Catholic University of Eastern Africa
- Kabarak University
- Technical University of Kenya
- Egerton University
If you look at courses offered at Strathmore and UoN,you’ll understand why employers prefer graduates from these universities. Strathmore, for instance offer less than 30 undergraduate courses, but the content in what they offer is sufficient enough to make an all round student.Mount Kenya University,on the other hand, has every course that exists on this earth. It clearly shows the institution is not focused on quality but quantity.
Have you ever wondered why academic dwarfs, like politicians prefer universities like MKU,St Paul’s University and KeMU?!!!!
