Mimi nahuzunika, bibi yangu alinifanyia kitendo.I lost my job last year after our supermarket was closed. Before then I used to have money and my family was okay. The worst happened in December when the manager called us to a meeting. It was a Friday morning and most of us had already checked in.
In the meeting, we sensed there was something amis. The manager cleared his throat and said,”I know you are anxious to hear what we have in store for you. Good morning? Okay, as the management, we have decided to downsize our workforce. Over the years, the business environment has been hostile for us and our income fortunes have dwindled. We are sorry to inform you that some of you will receive letters of termination”
Immediately the manager mentioned, “letter of termination”, we started looking at each other and wondering who will be sacked. I thought since I never did anything wrong, the management will instead reward me with a promotion. The worst happened when the manager read the names and mine was one of them.
The 2017, Christmas was the worst because I was jobless and my family needed the best treatment. I failed them. Even my children noticed there was something abnormal in our celebration arrangements because we didn’t go out as usual.
I have tried to search for employment since then but no one is willing to help me.The little my wife gets from her shop is the one we use to pay school fees, rent and buy shopping with. Over time, my wife’s respect towards me has faded because I don’t contribute anything. We have even started having small fights in the house and I see our future isn’t bright.
There’s something that happened last week that I haven’t told anyone. I was relaxing in my bedroom in the afternoon. I wasn’t feeling well and I thought I should relax and wait for my wife to give me Ksh500 to buy medicine. But before then,I was in Ngong to see a friend who had promised to link me to a mzungu employer. My wife had called to inquire what time I would be at home and I told her 7 pm.I didn’t manage to stay there at six because the headache was too much.
I arrived at home few minutes past 2 and went straight to sleep.Few minutes after I had slept,I heard my wife enter the house accompanied by a man.I was shocked to hear a man’s voice because we were not expecting a visitor.Few minutes later,my wife told him,”huyu ako Ngong, wacha tumalize polepole ndio uende.Ulisema hujawahipata since ile siku?”
I became more keen to know what would happen next. The man said in low tone,”na usinikazie kama ile siku”.
Few minutes later,I heard my wife cry in loud voice, “Wacha kunishika hivo nitapiga nduru, kwanza hii yako ni ndefu na nono”.Niliamka mara moja, hata ugonjwa uliisha.Nikakimbia machozi ikinitiririka.Kufungua mlango hvi nikaona wife miguu juu na mwanaume akitafuna mdomo.I shouted,”what are you doing in my house?”
The answer I got is stressing me up to now.The man answered me,”you idiot,do you know who pays your rent, who feeds you,who takes your children to school?”
I am now living with my brother in Kayole and I don’t know what to do.
