A woman in Nairobi is in tears after her MPESA was drained to minimum balance.
On Wednesday, a stranger came to her MPESA shop and politely asked to make a call to his family member. The stranger had tried to withdraw money but she was told present and ID.But the man did not have one and neither did she have credit to make a call. He borrowed the phone from the MPESA attendant and hurriedly saved his contact as 0722000000.He then pretended to make a call in vain. After a short while, he decided to leave without withdrawing the money.
On Thursday afternoon the MPESA attendant received a call from 0722000000.Knowing well this is the number Safaricom calls its customers with when reversal of money is required, the attendant gave all details to the caller, including MPESA password.
After two hours, the caller had withdrew all the money from the attendant’s phone.
Here is how the number was saved:
Next time,if a stranger asks to borrow your phone, don’t give him!
