Sportpesa may resume operations in 2020, sources confirm. The betting firm, which was closed in July 2019, has reapplied for the renewal of their license and they’re waiting for the response from BLCB.This is the second time Sportpesa has applied for the License.
On their Facebook page, Sportpesa confirmed that they are hopeful the government will consider their request, they even promised heaven in their post.
“SportPesa Care Hello Isaac, SportPesa has re-applied for a license and awaits feedback from BCLB. We shall communicate on any new development. We appreciate your loyalty and patience. ~MO”, replied Sportpesa Facebook handler.
In another Facebook replied,Sportpesa said;
“SportPesa Care Jambo Julius Malovi. Kwa sasa bado tunasubiri leseni kutoka BCLB.Tutawasiliana tukiwa na jambo mpya.Tunashukuru Kwa uaminifu na uvumilivu wako. ^AN”
Sportpesa was closed after Interior CS Fred Matiangi claimed that betting had destroyed the lives of youths. Ever since the giant betting firm was closed, several companies have retrenched workers. One of those is Mediamax Network which sacked 160 workers. Radio Africa also sent home 150 workers.
The absence of Sportpesa has also affected the Kenyan Premier League. Already, AFC Leopards Coach has resigned, or Mahia Coach has also threatened to quit. Confirmed reports indicate that players of the two clubs have not been paid for 6 months.
