Do you know before independence, Kenya was referred as British East Africa Protectorate, or British East Africa? The country was changed in 1920 to Kenya which is currently the official name of the country.

Some historians claim that the word Kenya originated from the Akamba language. The community pronounced Kirinyaga as Kinyaa.

The name British East Africa was given by the colonial government, they used it until 1920 when they decided to change to Kenya.

After the British departed the country, Kenya remained as the official name.
