I can’t believe that I have lived the saddest story ever but my hubby’s story is heartbreaking, so it all started when his dad had a fight with his uncles in the village because of land tussle which ended badly with the death of a child and his dad was blamed for it and sentenced to life in prison, my hubby was just 4yrs then so after the sentencing him his mom and 4 siblings were chased out of their paternal home and off they head for the streets, his mom struggles to raise all five children and put them through school, she does all sorts of odd jobs washing people’s clothes and tilling their land but still putting food on the table was a big challenge so kulala njaa was not unusual for them, amidst all this the best she could do for them was primary education, one after the other as they grew older they start moving out to search for their own lives, his elder brother goes to Nairobi after class eight, his three sisters get married one after the other, while him being the last born decided that he would still continue his education, so he started doing all sorts of jobs in the evening and weekends to save money for school fees at a village day school, he does this for two years but when he is in 4m 3 it gets very tough for him so he decides to go looking for scholarships, he goes to a certain boarding school and after listening to him the principal agrees to take him in coz he was a top achiever, so their agreement was he studies for the remaining two years and then he settles the school fees after completing KCSE, and that how he was able to complete high school, so after that he had to settle 40k for the two years of study b4 joining campus, he heads to his brothers place in Nairobi and start working during the day in a supermarket and at night as a security guard, he works there for a while and continues to settle his high school debt, one day our school tsc chem teacher was fired for coming to school drunk and tsc was taking long to allocate another teacher to us so the school decided to enrol a BOG teacher, our deputy was neighbor’s with my hubby and he was familiar with his struggles and academic achievement so he recommended him for the post, hubby left his jobs in Nairobi and came to work in our school and that how he and me met, so time comes for him to join campus, he get enrolled in Maseno to study statistics, meanwhile his mom got involved with the wrong man who unfortunately infects her with HIV, when she learns her status she gets very depressed and goes into denial, she refuses to take arvs and she ends up dead in 2015, now the owner of the house where he used to work as a guard had formed a friendship with him and he was rich so he agreed to support him in campus, he was also eligible for HELB, so time to join campus and off he goes, now he has to work here and there, doing projects for masters students and exams so he can earn an extra coin, at the end of 2015 I fall pregnant, the man is still in campus so now it’s one more responsibility in his plate, I managed to sit my exams with my son in the womb and now comes 2016, he asks me to move in with him b4 giving birth and I do so, he still continues to study he is now in second year, 2016 may I give birth fortunately he is in long holiday at the time, the birth goes smoothly and I spend only one night in the hospital, being a private hospital we get a bill of 11k which hubby successfully settled, we head home with a son in our arms, he stays first 3months and again he as to go back to school, he struggles all out to make ends meet, one hand is his study on the other his family, in school he hustles doing projects for others and writing reports at home on holidays he goes for vibarua, this continues until 2018 may when it’s time for his internship, he applied 5 companies around meru, they all accepted him so he had a chance to pick one which suits his needs, he goes for KNBS meru branch, knbs pays their interns so he would receive a salary of 40k per month, he works there for six months but still he was not able to save for his final exams coz life in town was not easy, by the time he was due to go back for final exams he had no exam fee, graduation fee or even money to rent a gown, one day while at KNBS office he met a former mp and decided to ask for help, the mp agrees and gives him a bursary worth 20k and that’s how he was able to go back, he sat his finals graduation day, his family did not show up claiming they had no money to go, while me I couldn’t go either coz he was unable to raise my transport too so he spent the day alone, still he graduated and came home, now comes 2019, the first few months his former boss at KNBS continues to give him work here and there as he continues applying for jobs, by may things go south when the boss retires and another is allocated from HQ, now he has no hustles and no job, now he talks to one of his friends who agreed to take him in at his house in Zimmerman as they do mjengo, that how he ended up in Nairobi, he goes for mjengo but still things don’t add up for us, we can’t pay our rent back in meru, I now have to pack and vacate the house in meru so I take all our stuff at one of our relatives home and then me and my son we go to my mom’s place in karatina nyeri, things by now are very hard, so he and his brother makes an agreement, his brother was opening up a new business so he decided to take us in but in exchange I work for him at his new shop, my son and I heads for thika, by now it August 2019, while there he would come on Sundays to see us, one time their foreman decided to transfer them to another site in kinoo, he and his friend worked in the new site for a while ofcourse being they come from Zimmer they couldn’t go home in the evening so they stayed at the site guarding at night, few days at the site and something goes wrong with the building when it was in first floor, it started sinking in so construction was suspended for the rest of the year as the engineer worked on the problem, his friend and the foreman left the site but he decided to stay behind since he was being paid for guarding the site, 2019 November he was finally able to rent another house near the site so we left his brothers house and moved into the house he rented, at the beginning of this year construction commenced again after the necessary repairs, now the owner of the building had already grown to like and trust him so he appoints him the new foreman, that how life began getting better again, so this time he decided to save as much money as he could to begin his own business coz as a foreman lot of money was passing through him, but unfortunately July when the construction was already completed and the house began to rent he died in a road accident, now his degree which he struggled so much to get is as good as trash, after all this struggles he dies at the age of 26, every time i think about all this i feel my strength fading, now I have to pick up where he left off…
