Cleophas Malala has been arrested for writing a script for Butere Girls . The title of the performance is Echoes of War.

The Kenya National Drama and Film Festival has witnessed many remarkable performances, but few have stirred conversation and controversy like *Echoes of War* by Butere Girls High School. More than just a school play, this production stands as a powerful statement about youth activism, governance, and civil liberties—themes that resonate deeply in today’s Kenya.

A Story of Resistance

Inspired by the Gen Z-led protests of June 2023, *Echoes of War* captures the frustrations of young people who refuse to be silent in the face of oppression. The story explores the power of youthful dissent, showing how political decisions shape everyday lives and why the fight for freedom of expression is never just for one generation—it’s for all who come after.

The Controversy

The play sparked heated debate after being removed from the festival lineup, allegedly due to pressure from government officials uneasy about its themes. The drama students were even sent home in what critics called an attempt to silence their voices. But in a landmark court ruling, the students won back their right to perform, proving that artistic freedom is worth fighting for.

More Than a Play—A Movement.

Now back on stage, *Echoes of War* is no longer just a performance—it’s a symbol of resistance. It challenges audiences to reflect on Kenya’s political landscape and the role of the youth in shaping the future.

By standing firm, these students have shown that the echoes of war are not just memories of the past—they are calls to action.
