Despite Moi and Ruto ruling Kenya for more than 30 years, the number of Kalenjins in Nairobi is small. It is very difficult to spot a Kalenjin randomly in Nairobi.People are wondering why the number of Kalenjins is so low despite being among the most populous communities in Kenya.
You see,Kalenjins like being around their relatives and neighbours. They become highly uncomfortable among strangers. When they visit Nairobi, the place looks odds for them. Even with a job, they will try all means to get a transfer to their towns in Kericho, Nakuru and Eldoret.
Kalenjins are farmers and pastoralists. Living in a place where they buy milk and food makes them uncomfortable. They are slow to adapt to new environment. Even when they relocate to USA,they prefer working in farms.
They also like living in spacious houses with large pieces of land. In Nairobi, there is no space for big compounds. The City is also fast and unforgiving for people who like doing things slowly. Kalenjins aren’t in a hurry to do things—they are only fast in field races.
