When Alice Wanjohi got a rare opportunity to relocate to the US, she focused on investing back at home

Through hard work and sleepless nights juggling multiple shifts, she sent money home to buy land and build a four-storey apartment

She trusted her mother with registration and construction, a decision that has cost her everything and strained relations with her brothers

However, she has undergone through painful betrayal she now faces from the very people she trusted most.

In a deeply emotional interview with YouTuber Betty AZ, Alice recounted how her dream of building a home in Kenya turned into a nightmare.

In 2003, after years of hard work and sleepless nights juggling multiple shifts in the US, she sent money home to buy land and start developing a four-storey apartment.

Her goal was simple; to secure a future for her children and have something to return to when she eventually came back home.

“I worked hard and did multiple shifts to make enough money to raise my kids and send money home,” she said tearfully.

Trusting her mother completely, she registered the property in her brother’s name, a decision that would later cost her everything.

By 2007, when the building had reached the third floor, clashes broke out in Molo. That was when Alice received a shocking call; the property she had been building was being sold.

Unknown to her, her brother had taken a loan against the property, and when he defaulted, it was put up for auction.

Still trusting her family, Alice agreed to take another loan under her brother’s name to complete the construction, believing it would all end well.

But instead of finishing the house, her brother diverted the funds into other ventures, and once again, the property was put on auction.

In 2019, after 21 long years in the US, Alice finally made it back home, but her stay was too brief to sort out the legal issues surrounding the property.

When she returned again in 2024, her own mother refused to let her into the house she had spent her life building.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Alice said. “My mother, the person I trusted most, had turned against me.”

Authorities intervened, summoning her mother to explain the situation.

She initially ignored the summons, and when she finally appeared, she claimed that Alice had already sold the property, now valued at KSh 70 million, to another brother living in the US.

Alice was then told to pay KSh 750,000 to have the title deed reissued.

She complied, but when the new title deed arrived, the details were wrong, a sign it was not genuine.

Feeling cornered, betrayed, and robbed of her hard-earned investment, Alice took the painful step of suing her own mother and brothers in court.

Today, she continues to fight for justice, a symbol of how trust and family ties can sometimes become the deepest wounds.

“I sent money out of love and trust,” Alice lamented. “I never imagined that the people I called family would be the ones to take everything from me.”
