Rejected by Kenya Army Over Height, Kericho Woman Goes on to Serve in US Navy

7

A woman from Londiani in Kericho County is inspiring many after turning rejection by the Kenyan military into an opportunity that led her to serve in the United States Navy.

Mercy Koech had initially applied to join the Kenya Army but was not recruited after failing to meet the height requirement, despite being physically fit. The setback forced her to rethink her future and look for opportunities beyond Kenya.

She later moved to the United States through an athletics scholarship, where her journey took an unexpected turn. Koech eventually enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a soldier while also studying nursing.

During her service, she was deployed to mission areas including Afghanistan and Somalia, where she gained valuable experience in both military operations and medical care.

After retiring from the Navy, Koech continued with her education and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in the United States. She is now also training in air rifle shooting with hopes of representing Kenya at the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Her journey from being turned away by the Kenyan Army to serving in the US military highlights how resilience and determination can open doors even after rejection.
