The legal fraternity in Nairobi is mourning the death of 26-year-old advocate Rachel Wangui Ndirangu, who has died nearly two months after suffering a serious fall at an apartment complex in Kilimani.
Ndirangu, who was an advocate at Wanjiru Kairu & Co. Advocates, reportedly fell from the third floor of Suite Life Apartments along Dennis Pritt Road on the night of Saturday, July 4, 2026.
According to accounts circulating after her death, Rachel had been attending a house gathering with friends when she fell through a third-floor window.
She sustained severe injuries and was rushed unconscious to Nairobi Hospital, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
She remained in critical condition for weeks before eventually succumbing to her injuries, nearly two months after the reported fall.
Her death was confirmed in early September, prompting an outpouring of grief from members of the legal profession.
The Law Society of Kenya Nairobi Branch mourned the young advocate, describing her death as an untimely loss to her family, colleagues and the wider legal fraternity.
Police investigating circumstances of the fall
Questions remain over exactly what happened inside the apartment moments before Rachel fell.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations took over the investigation and reportedly recovered several bottles of alcohol and drinking glasses from the apartment.
Three people, including Rachel’s boyfriend, were detained for questioning as detectives sought to establish the circumstances surrounding the fall.
According to police-focused reports, Rachel had been in a room with her 32-year-old boyfriend, Victor Mwangi, shortly before the incident. Ann Mwangi and Kelvin Kamau were also reportedly detained as part of the inquiry.
Investigators are said to be examining whether Rachel’s fall was accidental or whether there may have been foul play.
Importantly, there has been no established finding that she was pushed or that any of the people questioned caused her death.
Other people reportedly left the apartment
Detectives are also said to be interested in the movements of other people who were at the gathering that night.
Reports indicate that several people who were present in the room or apartment left before police arrived, potentially leaving investigators with unanswered questions about what happened immediately before Rachel went through the window.
Forensic examination reportedly established that Rachel fell through a window on the third floor rather than from an open balcony.
That finding has become an important part of the investigation as detectives attempt to reconstruct the final moments before the fall.
A young legal career cut short
Rachel’s death has shocked colleagues who knew her as a young advocate at the beginning of her professional career.
Her death has also raised renewed questions about the circumstances surrounding unexplained falls from residential buildings, particularly when several people may have been present at the scene.
For now, detectives have yet to publicly establish whether Rachel’s fall was a tragic accident or whether another person may have been involved.
The investigation remains ongoing.
