Why a Degree in Statistics is Not Useful in the Modern World: It Will Soon Become useless

A degree in Statistics was at one time one of the best programmes to study at any university. Those who were exceptionally gifted in Mathematics scrambled for few available opportunities at the department of statistics. We have come to note that a degree in statistics is not attractive anymore.

In the modern world, there are several Statistics and GIS software tools, which were not in existence some 20 years ago. These tools, together with advanced excel, can do the entire work of a statistician in a click of a button. What is needed is to train a zombie how to use the tools and also introduce him to some statistical terms, then pay him few coins to draw graphs.

In today’s world, people don’t need complex graphs and modelled results. Almost all innovations have been done by previous geniuses-I doubt whether there is any innovation a statistician can make which could change the world. A modern statistician is there to apply skills taught in class and not to innovate.

We have reached a point in life where social media dictates what people wants to consume. The modern generation has no time to read hard things-for what?!!-they instead want to see basic trends which they can easily absorb. This generation likes animation more than real graphs, which is why a graphic designer has more opportunities than a statistician.

In the modern world, there are several degree programs which can substitute statistics, they include actuarial science, economics, mathematics, bachelor of commerce, IT, computer science and many other science courses. In a working environment, if all these graduates are represented, then there is no need of employing a statistician. An individual can work as a financial officer and at the same time draw graphs, easy as that.

Though statisticians boast of having the best skills, I don’t think they have any meaningful benefits to the company. If you can contradict this statement, please show me what value a statistician brings to a company?!! I rest my case.
