Mount Kenya has a range of courses, from the least marketable to the best of the best in the job market. Since it’s a private university, students are given the opportunity to choose the courses of their choice. Here is a guideline on which course to pursue and one to drop.

  1. Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery

Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery should be your number one choice. At MKU a student can join with a C+, a grade that is not acceptable at UoN for the same course.

I usually advise B- or C+ students to consider this program as it guarantees employment after graduation…research shows that with a degree in Medicine & Surgery, chances of getting a job in Kenya are 98%.

  1. Bachelor of Pharmacy

Bachelor of Pharmacy is similar to Medicine and Surgery .The beauty of this program is that a graduate can decide not to seek employment but run his own pharmacy.

Bachelor of Pharmacy is highly rated in terms of employment opportunities.

  1. Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science

I will forget all courses but not Bachelor of Actuarial Science. But I should warn you; if you aren’t good in mathematics, please avoid this program.

Of course Actuarial Science is marketable, but it’s only useful to graduates when they supplement it with CFA or Actuarial professional certification from SOA.

  1. Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media and Communication

If you want to be a journalists, join MKU for a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media and Comminication.Upon graduation, you will be employed by any of the hundreds of media houses in Kenya-you can also seek employment in top blogs in the country.

  1. Bachelor of Business and Information Technology

You will also have the opportunity to select this course at MKU.While you are on session, make sure you enroll for ORACLE,CICT ,CISA or any IT related program-this way you will become more marketable.

  1. Bachelor of Commerce

Bachelor of Commerce and CFA will definitely rank you among the most sought graduates in the country. If CFA is tougher, enroll for ACCA or CFE.

  1. Bachelor of Economics and Statistics

Bachelor of Economics and Statistics is wonderful when you combine it with CFA or CIFA.But if you graduate with this degree and forget about professional certification, you will be jobless even forever.

  1. Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Studies
  2. Bachelor of Education in Special Needs Education (Primary Option)

Instead of pursuing the ordinary education program, I have selected these two programs which are on demand. If by good luck you secure employment at an international school in Kenya, you will smile all the way to the bank.

  1. Bachelor of Laws

Lawyers are among the most paid professionals in the country. After you have completed from MKU, you will join KSL for a Diploma in Law and later you get admitted to the bar.

A lawyer earns money based in the cases they handle. Some cases might earn one up to Ksh100 million while others are of low voltage. All in all,Law is a nice course.

  1. Bachelor of Science in Dental Technology

Dentists in Kenya earn upwards of Ksh1 million per month through their own clinics, which means pursuing Bachelor of Science in Dental Technology at MKU will build a strong foundation to earn crazy figures from your clinic, in case you decide to own one.

  1. Bachelor of Science in Finance and Statistics

To be safe, enrol for this program alongside CFA or CIFA.After graduation, you won’t have hard time securing employment.

  1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Nurses are hot cakes in Kenya.Bachelor of Nursing is not a gamble, it’s a course for individuals who plan to have a successful career even when other graduates are wallowing in misery.
