Edwin Sifuna is the ODM Secretary General,he has been holding the seat for more than 10 years—he succeeded Ababu Namwamba through a coup.After the death of Raila Odinga,ODM politicians allied to Ruto claimed that Sifuna doesn’t align to the believes of the party,they wanted to chase him away. It’s now more than 3 months but nothing has been done.Sifuna is still the ODM Secretary General.
A meeting of ODM leaders will be held in Mombasa today. Earlier, Kenyans believed that the party will chase him away,but sources say that the meeting is about ODM exit from AZIMIO coalition.
The reason ODM isn’t chasing Sifuna is because he is more popular than the party. Even if he is stripped off the SG position,he will still be re-elected in Nairobi.
ODM also fears that the party will be weakened. Luhyas will leave the party. Then ODM will remain a Luo party. Already Hassan Joho has formed his own party,Kisiis have left ODM,majority of Luhya are not in the party. It will be difficult for the ODM to negotiate with Ruto because it will remain a shell of its former self.
Another reason is that ODM have not found a good replacement. Most suitable people are Luos. If a Luo replaces Sifuna,the party will automatically be a Luo party.
They are also buying time,waiting for Sifuna to resign. If her resigns,it will be better for the party but if he is fired,he will gain sympathy and popularity. Already,many politicians from Western and Nyanza are behind Sifuna. His exist wills see many other politicians exiting ODN.
