Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion has told the government that teachers are not ready to return to class unless the 50-60 salary increment is implemented.
Sossion who was speaking for the first time since President Uhuru Kenyatta confirmed that the government does not have money to pay them, added that the 50-60 teachers’ pay is already running in their blood and nothing will stop them from getting the pay.
He urged the government to respect court ruling instead of issuing threats to the teachers who are fighting for their right.
However, Deputy President argued that teachers’ salaries are determined by the Salaries and Renumeration Commission and not courts. He told them to respect constitutional offices and ordered them report to work on Monday or face dire consequences.
Teachers’ strike enters week three and there are no signs that the strike will end soon. Since this is a crucial term, the government should move with speed and resolve the issue before National Examinations dates.Otherwise, the traditional KCSE and KCPE examinations may be postponed till 2016.
