Rwanda’s Higher Education Council (HEC) closed down Mount Kenya University (MKU) Rwanda Campus in August 2015.
The education body expressed concerns that the campus is located in Rwanda yet very few locals have been given opportunity to work at the institution. The body added that there is no single Rwandese in the Senior Management of the institution.
The body also accused Mount Kenya University of offering sub- standard courses which don’t meet basic requirements of higher education.
“Due to not fulfilling requirements, the following academic programmes of Mount Kenya University, Kigali campus have been suspended until all the deficiencies are addressed,” reads the notice.
Mount Kenya University opened its first branch in Rwanda five years ago, it has branches in Kigali and Kicukiro.Over 2,000 students have graduated from the institution and currently over 4,000 students are enrolled for various programmes.
There has been bad blood between Kenyans and Rwanda government over the extension of President Paul Kagame’s term. This has greatly contributed to some of decisions witnessed from the 1994 genocide country.
