Twitter has suspended over 250,000 accounts suspected to be promoting terrorist activities, mainly related to Islamic State militants (ISIS), in the last eight months.
A statement from Twitter read in part:
“Like most people around the world, we are horrified by the atrocities perpetrated by extremist groups. We condemn the use of Twitter to promote terrorism,”
“As the nature of the terrorist threat has changes, so has our on-going work in this area.”
The social media platform also warned that it will delete more accounts after further investigation.
The company also reiterated that terrorists nowadays use social media as the most convenient means of communication. To curb this, Twitter has employed spam-fighting software to find accounts that might be violating the terms of service.
“We have already seen results, including an increase in account suspensions and this type of activity shifting off of Twitter, “twitter said in a blog post
Attention now shifts to Facebook, which is more popular than Twitter. The company is closely monitoring several accounts that will be pulled down in the near future.
