Doctor union officials have been jailed for a month over contempt of court. Judge Hellen Wasilla, who had suspended the sentence two times to give room for negotiations, arrived at the ruling after the officials failed to reach an agreement with COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli to end the industrial action
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) officials had failed to reach an agreement with the Atwoli lead team that included the Council of Governors, the Treasury, Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SCR) and other Government organs. The doctor’s union officials instead on the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
The Judge dismissed claims by the union officials that the government signed the 2013 collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
Whether the doctor’s strike will be solved remains a mystery as their representatives have been jailed thus scuttling any efforts for further negotiations.
