In Kenya, buying a genuine car is like a gamble, especially if you are a first time buyer.It is always advisable to follow the right procedure so as to avoid being conned.

There are few steps top follow before you pay for the car. The first process is to request for a copy of the logbook, then proceed to KRA to do a thorough search to confirm that whoever is selling the car is the legitimate owner. At KRA, you will be required to pay a small fees to perform the task, which in most cases does not exceed Ksh 2,500.

The next step is to write agreement with the car owner in the presence of a lawyer or a witness. The agreement should be carefully drafted and signed by both parties.

Then proceed to the bank and pay using banker’s cheque, which will enable you present a receipt to the seller.

Get a copy of the previous owner’s PIN number plus a copy of his/her ID card.The two documents are important because they can be used in court in case matters arise.

Then fill the Log Book Transfer Form, which will require that you change ownership and other details bearing the previous owner’s personal information.

Present the logbook to KRA so as to confirm change of ownership

Pay the Purchase Tax and Transfer Fee at KRA

After following all the steps above, get your own car insurance.
