The countrywide lecturers strike is set to continue following their refusal to accept an offer from the government that would have seen the lowest paid assistant lecturer earn Sh 91,593 and professors Sh 240,491 per month.

The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) officials on Friday said the Sh 10 billion deal was small and vowed to soldier on with their nationwide strike. The deal translates to a basic salary increment of 3.2% and 1.6% on house allowance.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matang’I is optimistic that they will soon reach an agreement with the striking dons. While commenting on the latest happenings, he said the talks were going on well.

“There are structures for the talks and we leave the processes to continue. I am satisfied by the manner talks are going on,” Matiang’i said.

UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga has asked all its members to abscond classes on Monday and participate in a mother of all strikes never seen witnessed before in the country.
