I completed form four last year and I want to enroll for a course in statistics or computer science but I am confused, I actually don’t know which between the two courses is more marketable. If you can guide me on this I will appreciate.

Answer

Computer Science and Statistics are two courses you won’t overlook when choosing the most ideal career in Kenya, however Computer Science is more diverse and well-paying.

The reason why I will also go for Computer Science is because the course does not have salary ceiling. The course is unique, meaning not every individual will fit in, unlike Statistics which is a career anyone can pursue. You have noticed that data analysts, market researchers, conducting survey surveys and other duties meant for statisticians can be performed by even school drop outs, but developing Apps, being a system analyst and performing computer science related work can’t fit anyone-one must have relevant skills and passion.

In regards to salary scales, it’s known that Computer Science graduates earn based on their input. For instance, if you are recruited by IBM or Safaricom as a software developer, there is a time you become irreplaceable. When you reach this point, you are allowed to ask for any salary you want. When you are a statistician, you can’t dictate your salary because you are replaceable, which is why the profession has a salary ceiling.

In terms of fees, Computer Science is more expensive but it’s worth it.Prepare to pay Ksh 800,000 to Ksh 1,2 million in four year.

What about job market? If you score at least a second upper and go ahead to pursue CISCO or CICT,I am sure the longest time you will stay without a job is 3 months. If you become ignorant and pursue statistics, you might stay jobless for at least 1 year.

Conclusion: If I were you, I won’t go for statistics, I will definitely select Computer Science.
