Why Popular Blogs in Kenya are not hosted in Kenya

Popular blogs in Kenya are not hosted in the country, it’s only the struggling bloggers who are comfortable with web hosting companies in Kenya. There are numerous reasons why this is the case.

Before I knew the repercussions of hosting my websites in Kenya-that was in 2011, I had risked hosting mine in the country. Later I discovered there were many risks associated with that action when one popular website was permanently deleted and the owner left in tears.

In Kenya, when the growth curve of a blog is exponential, the owner is forced to upgrade from shared hosting plan to a dedicated server. Unfortunately, some of the hosting companies in the country aren’t genuine. They would cheat you into believing that your website is placed in a dedicated server yet its sharing resources with other websites. For those who don’t know what a dedicated server, a dedicated server is one whose entire resources are dedicated to a single website. The website owner pays for the entire space of that server. A dedicated server is very expensive. Due to the insincere nature of some of the hosting companies in Kenya, established publishers migrate their websites to American companies, which include Bluehost,WPEngine,Namecheap,GoDaddy,Amazon,Kinsta,Interserver etc.

I know majority of the bloggers in Kenya are not aware of this: Some of the bloggers have websites that have sensitive information like exposing politicians and corporates. These bloggers tend to hide their identity such that those exposed are unable to identify those behind the information. The unfortunate thing is that most of the time Kenyan web hosting companies are often compromised. Even if you instruct them to hide your identity, they will eventually reveal to the government and politicians, thus exposing you to unnecessary trouble. This is the reason popular bloggers like Nyakundi, Alai and others have opted to host their websites in the US.

What is common among Kenyan companies is that they don’t have their servers. What these companies do is to purchase a space from top servers in USA,which they will distribute to their customers in Kenya. Hosting companies like GoDaddy,Namecheap and Bluehost have reseller plans which allows micro hosting companies to pay for those plans and use it for hosting websites. Since the space is limited, Kenyan companies are unable to host viral websites.

If you are a blogger and by chance your blog becomes viral, it’s time you start thinking of migrating your site to more established hosting companies in the US.I will provide a list of the best hosting companies. If you ignore, it will reach a time you give up due to regular downtime.
