LIBERIA’S Retired footballer George Manneh Weah has been elected as president in Liberia in a repeat presidential poll held today. At the age of 51 ,the former Chelsea and Manchester city player has successfully succeeded the first elected female president in Africa Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who will be  stepping down after 12 years.

More than 2 million people were eligible to cast their ballots in the nation of a population of 4.6 million people, founded by U.S slaves in the 19th century. This will be the first time for many generations that Liberians witness a transfer of power from one elected leader to another. Many leaders have praised the country for conducting the presidential run-off in a peaceful manner saying that it signified another positive step towards deepening democracy in Africa.
