Yesterday I received this email from a Kenyan who scored a D+ in KCSE,he is in dilemma on whether to repeat form four or simply take on life as it presents itself.

“I am Kevin from Nyeri.I did KCSE in 2017 and scored a D+.Ever since I got the results, I have been a laughing stock in my village. I am in deep pain, I am embarrassed. I need your advice; can I repeat form four or I simply continue with life?”

Answer

Scoring a D+ does not mean you failed in life, it means you didn’t meet the minimum requirements to take you to a university for a degree course. I will frankly tell you this: don’t dare repeat form four, unless you were sickly when taking your KCSE exam.

Over the past 20 years, I have been observing the performance trends of students who repeat form four; none of the D+ students end up scoring above C+ in KCSE-which means that if you repeat form four, the same fate would befall you.

Assuming you repeat today, it will take you at least two years to come to terms to what happens a time like this next year. I am sure the best grade you can score is a C plain, which is not good enough to take you to university for a degree program.

My opinion is, select a marketable course to do for a D+ grade, then start life from there. I have a few suggestions for you:

  1. Diploma in Electrical & Electronics Engineering
  2. Diploma in Catering & Hotel Management
  3. Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
  4. Diploma in Graphic Design
  5. Certificate in Cake Baking
  6. Hair dressing

Once you are through with one of these courses, start your own business which is relevant to the course you pursued in college. You can start a garage, car wash, executive salon & kinyozi, graphic design and decoration company, catering and hospitality company or a restaurant.

The second option is to choose any business you are comfortable with. Look for a bearing, you will finally make it in life.

I want to challenge you.Do you see the big cars on our roads? Imagine 80% of them are owned by people who never did any degree program!!!
