Oh, a hangover? Not again! Well, if you keep downing too many drinks in a single night, expect the annoying hangover the morning after. It’s ok to have wild night once in a while, and no once blames you, I mean, who didn’t have one, or two, right? The problem is the body-aching and head-pounding regret we feel the next morning.
Although the best cure and preventive measure for hangover is to avoid drinking too much alcohol, we know that’s not really realistic. So, we will tell you what to do in order to avoid getting hangover after spending a crazy night out. But don’t panic if you forget to follow these advices in time, as there are few other things you can do to cure your existing hangover.
5 Tips to Avoid Hangover
1.Try to limit the amount of alcohol you’ll consume that night, or occasion
2.Don’t drink when you’re hungry. Even if you don’t have time for a whole meal, get at least a quick snack before going to the event you’re planning or thinking to drink. And if you don’t have time even for a snack, try to find something to eat while drinking.
3.Drink more slowly
4.Avoid drinking alcohol with dark color. Dark-colored drinks contain congeners – natural chemicals which cause irritation of the brain’s blood vessels and tissues, thus making your hangover even worse.
5.Drink water. Alcohol is a diuretic, so drinking too much makes us dehydrated. And dehydration is the reason for most of our headache symptoms. Therefore, it’s recommended drinking water in between each alcoholic drink, or at least before going to bed. In this way, you will reduce the severity of your next morning’s headache, nausea, fatigue, and confusion. A good thing is to keep a glass of water on your nightstand to quench your thirst during the night. Besides water, you can also go with non-fuzzy soft drinks as they accelerate the absorption of alcohol into your system.
How to Cure a Hangover
We mentioned drinking water as a preventive measure of hangover, but water is equally beneficial even if you didn’t manage to avoid the hangover. This notion might seem repulsive at first, as you already have plenty of liquid in your system, but it’s the first thing to do if you like to get rid of the painful headache as quickly as possible.
Another thing to drink is peppermint or ginger tea. Studies have proven that both of these teas reduce motion sickness and nausea, some of the well-known hangover consequences.
Another liquid on the list is coffee. The caffeine acts against the chemical compounds of pure alcohol, or ethanol which are responsible for the debilitating headaches. However, make sure you drink enough water along with your cup of coffee as coffee is another diuretic so it can worsen your dehydration.
Enough drinks, now let’s see what foods are recommended for curing a hangover. The first food combination is pretzels and bananas. These foods are rich in potassium and salt – electrolytes which attach to water, preventing further dehydration. That’s why it’s recommended eating this food combination.
Asparagus possesses biological function which can help lessen hangover symptoms. The Journal of Food Science published a 2009 study which claims that asparagus contains amino acids which can improve the speed of human cells breaking down alcohol, thus preventing some of the long-term damage from the toxic byproducts of alcohol, one of which is hydrogen peroxide. In this way, this food is also protecting your liver cells.
Over-the-counter painkillers are helpful in case of muscle cramps and headaches. However, although some recommend taking an aspirin, paracetamol-based remedies are actually more recommended as aspirin can further worsen motion sickness and nausea, as well as irritate your stomach.
