This happened on Thursday June 8th around 9pm. I requested for an uber from a well known shopping center to my house. 5mins later the driver by the name DENNIS SAGWE called me and asked for my location, 2mins after directing him he called me saying that he couldn’t see anyone standing on the road. I told him that I was the only lady standing by the road waiting for a Toyota belt a KCG 632D, but none had passed my way. He told me that he had gotten a new car Toyota Ractis KCN 995U. I asked him why he had come with a different car from the one that was registered in the app and he quickly responded that he had just bout a new car and that probably the Uber app hadn’t updated his profile. I hang up, and a few minutes later we connected.
The trip started off well with him asking how my day was, I responded and he went ahead to ask if I was religious, which I told him I was. He went ahead to ask me strangest question that ran a chill down my spin, “are you a Christian or a Devil worshiper?”, I sensed danger but since it was a short trip and I was already in my neighborhood I kept calm and responded that I was a Christian. His response was “napendanga watu kaa nyinyi”.. I asked him to end the trip 100 meters from my gate after I saw the watchman but he drove to the gate where we found a couple in a white car KBJ ***. The uber driver asked me if the white car was an uber and I told him I didn’t know.
He pulled down his window and asked the guy in the white cat if he was an uber driver, which he said he wasn’t.
I insisted that he end the trip and leave sent him Ksh 400 but it wasn’t enough as my trip cost came to Ksh 550. I took out a 1k note and handed it to him waiting for my Change. That’s when trouble started.
He told me, “I’m f***ing high and I don’t return change when I’m high, wait until morning and I’ll send you the change” I insisted on getting my change and asked to to Mpesa me. He said he won’t and he told me to get out of his car.
I told him I won’t leave without my change and that’s when he got physical. He was shoving me and pushing me to get out of his car and when I didn’t budge he started cursing at me and calling me names. He told me “oooh.. Kwa hivo hutaki kutoka kwa Gari? Ngoja uone kwenye ntakupeleka, utaona”, and he drew up the car windows. Just before he locked the car I opened the door on my side and stepped on the door (I’d gone into self defense mode). He continued yelling at me “funga hio mlango wewe, si nimekwambia ufunge” I still didn’t budge, his yelling had attracted the watchman who came to ask if I was OK.
Even before I could tell him what was going on the driver went to 💯 % crazy and started screaming that I was stealing his money. He ran to the white car and started screaming at the lady who was in the car with her dude, calling her ‘Agnes’, saying that she was his aunt’s sister, called her a witch and demanded that she gets out of the car.
By now the whole Estate was awake and the wazees were asking me what was happening. As I was explaining to them he saw me and came after me trying to punch me. He also called me ‘Agnes’ saying, “wewe Agnes leo ningekutom**”..
The watchman and wazees tried restraining him but he was kicking and throwing punches and everyone. So they roughed him up and tied him up with a rope and called the police who came almost immediately as I live just 5mins walk to buru buru police station.
They made enquiries of which I was more than glad to answer.
Now the uber driver was screaming calling himself Chris brown and rolled all over the place, which agitated the police who roughed him up some more and frisked him where they found my cash and handed it to me. He was handcuffed and bundled to the back of the police pick up while his car was towed to the police station. On reaching the station he started drama again, screaming and cursing at the police officers. It took three police men more than 15mins to get him out of the pick up. They searched his car and found bhang and other drugs.
I wrote my statement and one other officers dropped me home around 3am.
If not for God and luck, I would probably be a dead rape victim. That was the comment of the police officers and they told me that they’ve had several women who have come to report assault and raped cases by taxi drivers.
Honestly, I’m more than traumatized, I’m scared of leaving my house, am afraid of all taxis.
Please warn your loved ones never to accept rides when the driver comes with a different car from the one registered, to be alert always times and pray at all times.
Thank you almighty God for saving me from this death trap.
