Blood moon appeared in Kenya on 7th September 2025 from 830.pm until 10.30 pm. It occurred in most parts of Kenya. The next year it will appear is 2027. Last time it appeared was 2018.
A blood moon refers to the reddish appearance of the Moon during a total lunar eclipse. This occurs when the Earth positions itself directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow (umbra) fully over the Moon and blocking direct sunlight from reaching it. The red hue is caused by sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere, which scatters shorter blue wavelengths while allowing longer red wavelengths to bend (refract) around the planet and illuminate the Moon, similar to how sunrises and sunsets appear red.
Globally, total lunar eclipses happen roughly once or twice per year on average, though the exact number varies—some years have none, while others may have up to three. However, not all lunar eclipses are total; only about one in three are, as the Moon must pass through the center of Earth’s shadow for a full eclipse. From any specific location on Earth, you might see a blood moon every two to three years, depending on your position relative to the night side of the planet during the event (visibility requires the Moon to be above the horizon and clear skies).
