Ever wondered why a kilogram of meat from a village butchery always feels heavier than the one from a Nairobi butchery?
Recently, I placed a 400g loaf of bread on the weighing scale at a certain butchery, and that thing displayed 600 grams.
Meaning…the butcher man has already added “invisible weight” before you even arrive!

So when you proudly buy “one kilo of meat,” what you actually get is 800 grams of meat and 200 grams of Nairobi air.
Now, since a kilo of beef is going for KSh 1,000, that means 100 grams of actual meat costs KSh 100. Which logically means the butcher is selling you 200 grams of air for KSh 200.
And that’s not all — don’t forget the “bonus” bones that come with every kilo, worth KSh 100 Then add the butcher’s KSh 50 profit margin for every kg.
So in total, for every kilo you buy, you’re basically paying KSh 350 for meat that isn’t even there….In 2018, a kg was retailing at ksh.350.
At this rate, I suggest we consumers come together, buy cows directly from farmers, and slaughter them ourselves or else, we buy some portable weighing scales.
Please butcher men… reduce amount of air you’re selling to us from 200g per kg of meat to around 70g of air per kg.
