Ronald Kiprotich Melly has been arrested for masquerading as a doctor, putting the lives of pregnant women and patients at risk.
Kiprotich does not hold any medical certificate but he is the Medical Superintendent of Meteitei Sub-County Hospital in Nandi.The grandson of the late Ezekiel Barng’etuny heads the hospital, meaning junior nurses and medical practitioners take instructions from him.
The fake doctor has performed surgery and delivered babies by Caesarian section on several women, but all this time no one has ever noticed he is not qualified for the job.
Records show that Melly joined the University of Nairobi for a medical degree but ended up dropping out after getting three supplementary papers.
Medical Board CEO Daniel Yumbya confirmed that Melly’s name is not in their register.
“The university cannot trace him on their records,” said Mr Yumbya. “He is not among those who qualified or failed in his year. What is even surprising is that Mr Melly says he has forgotten his university admission and registration number. I am waiting for official communication from the university tomorrow (Tuesday).”
Mr Melly was arrested at the Kenya Medical and Practitioners Board offices. He will be arraigned in court for practicing without a valid license.
