Nyeri Deputy Govenor Mutahi Kahiga has taken over as the new Governor of Nyeri after the death of Wahome Gakuru.
The new governor assumed office immediately after reading the following clause in the constitution:
Article 182 (2):If A Vacancy occurs in The Office of The County Governor,The Deputy Governor shall assume Office as The County Governor for the remainder of The Term of The County Governor.
Article 182 (3): If A Person assumes Office of County Governor under Clause (2)The Person shall be deemed for The Purpose of Article 180(7)-
(a)To have served A Full Term as County Governor if,at The Date on which The Person assumed Office, more than Two and a Half Years remain before the date before The Date of the next regularly Scheduled Election under Article 180.
Mutahi Kahiga will serve as the new governor until 2022.
