Grace had been jobless for 6 years. She had completed her undergraduate degree and CPA qualification.
The jobless graduate had knocked almost every door that even gate keepers had known her by name. Then came a day, one evening, her aunt who was working for a government institution called and delivered good news. โI have talked to one of my childhood friends who is a director in an NGO, he has agreed to take you as a Program Manager but he would like to interview you tomorrow before he gives you the job. Grace was excited to hear that, โfinally! Thank you Godโ, she said.
The following morning she dressed up, took a matatu for work but on reaching the stage she found the stage was empty, there were no matatus. She decided to wait as other people in the crowd.
After 5 minutes of waiting a Matatu approached and people started scrambling for seats. Grace made sure she secured a seat, but during the struggle, a man unintentionally touched her white blouse with dust. Grace was not happy and she bitterly told the man, โyou ugly man, why do you smear dirt on my blouse? Do you know the cost of this cloth?โ. The man replied, โsorry my daughter, I am sorryโ. Grace sternly looked at her and concluded, โhave mannersโ.
Few minutes later, Grace arrived at the NGO offices, she was given tea as she waited for her employer. Minute later, the man she confronted in the matatu was dropped by the company vehicle. Grace didnโt believe her eyes, she lowered her head in shame as the man explained to the secretary how his car got a puncture and he had to scramble for matatu space.
After minutes of waiting, Grace was ushered into her potential employerโs office. The same man she shouted at was seated at the far end as Grace approached. He told her,โsitโ, he paused for sometime and continued,โIf someone throws mud at you, what will be your reaction?โ. Grace posed for a while, gazing at the celling as she wondered how to answer the question. She finally replied, โI will tell him to apologizeโ. The boss looked at her and said, โdid you do that when you were boarding a matatu? โShe looked at him, sweating and shaking. She then replied, โI am sorry sir, I am sorryโ. The boss concluded, โthe interview is over, I will call youโ.
Moral of this story: Your boss can be anyone, treat everybody with respect.
