Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The UN-Habitat internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the Supervision of the Programme Coordinator (Youth and Livelihood unit), the intern will:
– Support the development of content internally and externally through the development of stories, photo essay, cartoons, blog posts, and other methods.
– Create story lines and narratives that demonstrate results from the perspective of the people affected by the work of UN-Habitat.
– Support social media management and outreach. The candidate’s core responsibilities will focus on UN-Habitat Youth Face book page, Twitter and Instagram account.
– Generate and/or curate blog posts (including stories, articles, pictures, infographics, etc).
– Assist in publishing of UN-Habitat Youth stories or articles on the unhabitayouth.org web page.
– Design documents; creating infographics and one- pagers.
– Create one page research briefs on research publications already undertaken and profiling them across UN-Habitat Youth Unit social media pages.
– Create UN-Habitat Youth monthly #UrbanAction newsletter campaigns and disbursing them upon the supervisor’s approval.
– Assist in the social media and communications engagement during the World Habitat Day.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred Area of Study:
Social studies, International Relations, Law, International Development, Arts, ICT, Communications, Business or other related field.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The UNEP internship is for 6 months.
