K24, which is owned by Mediamax Network, is set to undergo major changes following the exit of its Group Managing Editor Peter Opondo.
Mr.Opondo resigned from Mediamax in May 2015 after serving the station for three years; he officially exited the media house in September 2015. The seasoned Journalist handed over his resignation letter to venture into private business.
However, reports from the station indicate that major changes are set to occur, which will affect senior management, News Editors and Anchors. The changes are intended to bring new faces which can attract advertisements from corporates.
Since most of the Anchors at K24 are paid above Ksh 200, 000, the management is not pleased with what they bring to the station. Most of the adverts that appear on K24 screen belong to either the Government or K24 affiliate stations.
Media Industry in Kenya is not doing well, some of the media houses have started laying off workers in order to cut costs. The wave started with Standard Media Group, which retrenched over 100 of its workers, including popular Anchor Mwanaisha Chidzuga.Next was Nation FM, which fired Ciku Muiruri and Sanaipei Tande.NTV also followed suite, firing Sheila Mwanyigha who served the station for 11 years.
K24 was restructured in 2013 where they raided Citizen TV,almost bringing it to its knees. The aim was to give the station a national look and make it more appealing to corporates for advertisements. However, the strategy did not achieve the expected results.
