English Premier League is represented by four teams at the UEFA Champions League: Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City. Both teams have players who can win any silverware, but their performance at the ongoing Champions League competition is worrying.
On Tuesday, Manchester United lost 2-1 to PSV Eidhoven while their rivals, Manchester City, lost with the same goal margin to Italian Champions Juventus. On Wednesday night, Arsene Wenger’s team, Arsenal, lost 2-1 to Dinamo Zagreb in a game which saw under-performing Olivier Giroud given a red card for a dangerous tackle.
Though both teams expect to overturn the results during return matches, there is no assurance that they will perform any better, given that they are also struggling to win matches against small teams in the Barclays Premier League.
Manchester United Spent close to € 300 million to sign new players but their value is yet to be seen. Manchester City, on the other hand, spent £49 million on Raheem Sterling, who is yet to bring an impact to the team. Arsenal was the only big team in the Premier League which did not spend on players; Arsene Wenger thought the current team is good to win trophies. Chelsea also has world class players but their recent performance is something to give Jose Mourinho sleepless nights.
There are all indications that English teams will not advance to the next level at the Champions League tournament. Given that the Premier League is rated among the best in the World, where is the problem?
