You scored a D+ or C- in KCSE and wondering what is the best diploma course to pursue in Kenya. Well, we have an answer for you. We have established that a diploma in criminology and forensic science or a diploma in GIS and Remote Sensing will take you places. These two diploma courses are suitable for people who wish to work for security firms such as G4S, KK Securities, government security organs like the CID and NSIS and NGOS operating in hardship areas.
The world is now facing terrorism threats, not once but regularly. People with skills that would detect and monitor such activities are of much importance to institutions and governments, Kenya being one of them. Such people often get training in GIS and Mapping and also criminology. This training, though taught at diploma level, can guarantee you not only well paying job but also a successful career.
A diploma course in GIS and Remote Sensing, which is not familiar to many form four leavers and even people pursuing diploma studies, is one of the fastest growing diploma courses in the country. As you are aware, I assume, media houses, NGOs especially those dealing with environmental and security matters and also the ministry of environment, United Nations and even the Kenya Defense Forces are heavily applying GIS tools to tackle some issues related to remote sensing and mapping. This work is done by GIS Analysts, who are mostly diploma holders.
What I know, local media houses will finally adopt what UK and US media houses started adopting a decade ago. You see, nowadays people would prefer reading information which is displayed in form of a map, and this is where GIS comes in.For instance, during the US elections, you would see popular blogs like the Independent, theguardian,UStoday and others displaying maps indicating where and how Hillary Clinton could, that was the work of GIS analysts.
What I am trying to say here is that GIS is one of the few courses expected to be hot cakes in Kenya in the near future.
Moving to Criminology, this one is evident that security firms are increasing in numbers in our country. These firms require supervisors with a background in criminology. The only way you can join them is by pursuing a course in criminology.
It is now your choice, either to choose traditional courses, which are now not marketable, or go for the two aforementioned diploma courses.
