Mousa Faki Mahamat is the Chad’s Foreigner Affairs Minister, the man who beat Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary to replace Dr Zuma as the AU Chair. Before the elections,Mrs Mohammed was the front runners, moments later Faki was declared winner after garnering 28 votes against Mohammed’s 25 points.
While Kenya was in mourning mood after losing the important seat, several CORD supporter celebrated the loss. Majority of Raila’s voters believed it was not Amina’s loss but Uhuru’s after the government spent over Ksh50 million to lobby members to vote for Mrs Amina.
But who is Mousa Faki Mahamat? Well, Mr Faki is the Chad’s Foreign affairs Minister who was one of the strongest contestants for the seat.
The 56-year-old is a father of five who previously worked at the AU as the body’s chair of the AU’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council.
Before taking up his current post, Mahamat was his country’s prime minister. His boss, Chadian President Idriss Deby, who has ruled the country since coming to power in 1990, is the current chairperson of the AU.
The new AU Chair is now expected to take over from Dr Zuma,who decided not to defend her position as the Chair.
