Madaraka Express, Kenya Railway’s new trains, have the cheapest fares for people travelling from Nairobi to various destinations along Mombasa Road.
The Madaraka Express train service between Nairobi and Mombasa is currently operational with one train leaving Mombasa and another leaving Nairobi as below:
Mombasa to Nairobi – 09:00 am (Departure)
Nairobi to Mombasa – 09:00 am (Departure)
Mombasa to Nairobi – 01:30 pm (Arrival)
Nairobi to Mombasa – 01:30 pm (Arrival)
This is an express service with the train only stopping at Mtito Andei Intermediate station.
A ticket costs Ksh. 3,000 for the first class and Ksh. 700 for the Economy class. Children under three (3) years will not pay any fares; those between three (3) and eleven (11) years will pay half price; and those above eleven (11) years will pay full price. The tickets are on sale at the Mombasa and Nairobi Terminus. Travelers can buy tickets by cash or through the debit/credit cards. One can book upto four (4) days in advance.
Kenya Railways has taken initiatives to offer a connect service between the by bus between the Mombasa and Nairobi Termini. In Mombasa, passengers are picked at the old Mombasa railway station at 7:00 am and dropped at the Mombasa Terminus whereas in Nairobi, travelers will be picked at the Nairobi Central railway station and dropped at the Nairobi Terminus. The buses sourced from NYS and Kenya Posta will remain at the Termini and transport travelers on arrival at both destinations. The connect service is on offer upto June 6th, 2017
