Success is not only attached to an A material student, even a D material can aw well excel in life. If you scored a D in KCSE,or say an E,don’t lose hope, life is fair for everyone—it knows how to reward everyone regardless of how humanity perceive you.
Recently I was relaxing with some of my friends. One of them was a student who had scored a D+ in KCSE.The student looked disturbed as he explained that her friends had scored above B plain. She explained that her parent had even refused to greet her the previous day, calling her a goat. The girl was contemplating moving as far away as possible to avoid her father’s frequent outbursts.
This issue prompted me to reveal what I have seen in life. You see, for you to succeed in life, several components must come into play, which include education, approach to life and social network. The first component, education, is essential but not necessarily the most important-social network is the most important. When you score a D or E in KCSE, you automatically know that most of the doors leading to success in education are closed, you have to explore other options. Immediately you understand your case, start exploring other options, which we are to discuss below.
- Start a profitable business venture
The moment you get your academic results and confirm your grade is D or E, think of a profitable venture. If there is no capital at your disposal, approach your parents, explain to them what you wish to do in life—they will understand—and plan on how to set the business up. With dedication, persistence and strategy, you will one day employ graduates.
- Move away from the village
Moving away from the village may give you exposure needed to spot opportunities. If possible, settle in Nairobi where there are numerous opportunities
- Enroll for technical courses in middle level colleges
With a D or E in KCSE,no university will admit you…they all want top cream. The best thing to do is, identify a good middle level college and enroll for technical courses. Some of the best courses to pursue include:
- Electrical and Electronics Engineering
- Catering and Hotel Management
- Cake banking
- Mechanical Engineering
- Hair Dressing
- Deejaying
Once you are through with any of the courses listed above, employ your skills by starting a relevant business venture. If you did cake baking, start a bakery…if you did mechanical engineering, start a mechanic shop…if you did hair dressing, start an executive salon…if you did deejaying, start a DJ academy.
- Explore your talent
Talent pays more than education, it’s been proved. If you are a talented footballer, join any football club and work hard to be noticed. If you have talent in singing, keep pushing, go to National Theatre and register as a member.
- Become a farmer
There is no time of wasting 13 years in college only for you to become an employee…it’s good sometimes to score a D so as to forget about education. If your father has land where you can practice farming, tell him about your plan of becoming a farmer. If he agrees to give you a portion of the land, identify profitable business ventures and start making money.
- Go abroad
You will realize that most people in USA, Dubai, Qatar and UK are individuals who did not excel in school. The nice thing about them is that they are even supporting their brothers in Kenya who scored As.USA, Qatar and Dubai have numerous job opportunities for Kenyans who never excelled in school.
