Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Governance Affairs Office engages with and guides all relevant stakeholders ranging from Member States, major groups and stakeholders as well as business and the private sector.
The internships are in various units of the Governance Affairs Office within UN Environment, based in Nairobi, namely: the Civil Society unit and the Partnerships unit.
1. The Civil Society Unit engages on civil society matters and ensures effective participation of major groups and stakeholders in UN Environment work at all levels. These allies and partners to UN Environment provide long-term, broad-based and essential support for UN Environment’s mission and mandate;
2. The Private Sector Unit is responsible for engaging international organizations, UN agencies, the private sector and foundations in the work of the UN Environment Assembly. Its overall objective is to strengthen the visibility and authority of the Assembly.

The duration of an Internship is three months minimum and a maximum is six months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Telephone or interviews via skype will be scheduled for shortlisted candidates.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the office to which the intern is assigned to; the nature of specific projects and the internship duration. Duties may include, but not limited to:
Carry out research, analysis and drafting of documents presenting data and information gathered from diverse sources to support the implementation of projects and activities;
Support the preparation of briefings, information material and presentations.-Assist with the website and database management and update;
Assist with the organization of meetings, workshops, webinars and other similar activities, supporting with the preparation of agendas, co-drafting background materials, meeting reports, assist with ad hoc meetings and prepare meeting minutes if required;
Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents;
Perform other duties as assigned.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat).
