Job purpose
The Associate, Data Analysis will synthesize, analyze, and extract actionable recommendations from information collected from all of Evidence Action’s programs. The role will require an audit of data on the management information system (MIS) and analysis of various survey data, and systematic documentation of the analytical efforts used to reach the evidence-based recommendations. S/he will contribute to the development of appropriate measurement, sampling, and survey strategies and the design of survey instruments to gather quantitative and qualitative data. The ideal Associate, Data Analysis will be extremely intellectually curious, service-oriented, and able to conduct, document, and explain complex analysis and research geared towards real-world improvements in the programs service delivery to millions of people throughout East Africa.
This position will be a critical piece of the Data Analysis team that operates within Evidence Action’s broader Monitoring, Learning, and Information Systems (MLIS) team.
Duties and responsibilities
Monitoring and Evaluation Support
The Associate, Analysis will provide support and guidance to Evidence Action’s monitoring systems:
- Contribute to the design of the program monitoring processes to ensure appropriate measurements, sampling, and survey strategies
- Support the design and testing of survey instruments and other research tools that will enable clear and meaningful analysis
- Support in the development of key program indicators for measuring of program components and of assessing program outputs and outcomes
- Maintain a service-oriented, client-based approach in considering the core research questions held by Evidence Action program teams that will facilitate operational and cost-efficiency improvements.
Analysis
The Associate, Data Analysis will coordinate analysis activities of administrative and monitoring data for program teams
- Cleaning and analyzing administrative and monitoring data of programs to inform programmatic decisions-making
- Ensure data quality at each stage of program monitoring: highlight recurring data quality issues with the program team and provide recommendations for course correction when necessary
- Produce data reports and lists to support day to day implementation of the program
- Support the development of impact models for key program decisions and metrics.
- Identify and produce well-designed statistical measurements to express results of program data.
- Build and update dashboards and info-graphics to visualize results of program data
- Extract meaning, through analysis, of program data to provides insightful interpretations of data.
- Provide key analytical and knowledge inputs from program data for articles, policy briefs, memos and major proposals
- Support data requests from the program team(s), as needed
Data Management
The Associate, Analysis will play a prominent role in developing and implementing strong data management systems for program teams
- Support in the development and documentation of data management protocols and tools
- Ensure adherence to data management protocols in all data collection and analysis activities
- Maintain proper documentation of all analysis for ease of replication and explain the methodology used in the analysis.
- Document all data management procedures and lessons learned to increase the quality and reliability of data collection for future years and for other geographies
- Responsible for maintaining and organizing all data files on identified platforms (like Box, PROGMIS etc.) as per agreed protocols
- Supporting the Associate, Information Systems in designing a data management platform and framework that allows for the easy synthesis of all program data
Outside of the stated roles, the Associate, Analysis will also be expected to support the Associate Manager, Analysis and the Senior Associate, Research in specific tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in economics, statistics or another quantitative field
- A minimum of 1-2 years’ work experience in an analytical and quantitative role
- Strong working knowledge of statistical software packages such as Stata, R, MatLab, SAS etc. with the ability to learn and adapt to new programs (experience with Stata and Excel highly preferred)
- A working knowledge of mobile phone survey programming experience in Open Data Kit preferred (at a minimum, willingness to learn and independently acquire new technical skills)
- Experience of building and executing data management systems (experience with MySQL highly preferred)
- Ability to manage and respond to varied tasks in a quick and efficient manner
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills to work effectively with a team that is geographically dispersed
- Self-directed/self-motivating personality, with proven ability to manage demands from multiple supervisors
- Strong critical and analytical thinking skills
- Intellectual flexibility and willingness to form and adjust opinions based on evidence
- Quick to learn, motivated to self-teach and capable of independently translating new knowledge into practice
- Willingness to travel
