Information Technology is offered in several colleges and universities in Kenya but you need to join the best so as to receive world class training.
Information Technology(IT) training needs not only theoretical skills but also practical lessons where you are provided with tough tasks which needs to be solved in the real world.
If you are planning to study IT in a Kenyan college, the following are best colleges and Universities to join:
- JKUAT
JKUAT is ranked as the best training institution for IT students. This is where the inventor of MPESA was trained. Under the School of Computing and Information Technology, there are several computer and IT related courses. With a C and above, you’ll be admitted to a course of your choice.
JKUAT offers courses from Certificate to PhD level.
- University of Nairobi
If you are unable to get a chance at JKUAT, pick a course at the University of Nairobi.UoN is the best university in Kenya, meaning that the quality of education is high.
Main intake being in September/October for all the courses and
December/January for Bachelor of Education(Arts), Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Travel and Tourism

The problem with the University of Nairobi is that admission grades are higher than those in other universities.
- Kenyatta University
Most of the most successful software and computer engineers are from Kenyatta University. Here you will be allowed to pursue IT related courses both at Diploma and Degree level. The quality of education is high and coupled with practical lessons.
- Maseno University
Another institution you should look at is Maseno. In this institution, all courses are supplemented with IT.Unlike in past where graduates completed college without knowing the meaning of “mouse”, at Maseno University, you are taught everything that pertains IT.There is also IT and Computer Science degree courses.
- Technical University of Kenya
Any courses which is taught at Technical University of Kenya is marketable.TUK’s graduates are marketable out here, no doubt about that. One advantage you have as a TUK student is that you are taught by the most experienced lecturers. Another one is, the entry requirements are reasonably low.
- Moi University
Moi University offers several Engineering courses as well as IT programmes from certificate to PhD level. The institution is ranked number 5 by Webometric, implying that the quality of education at the university is world class. Moi,UoN,KU,JKUA and Maseno are certainly the best in Kenya, these should be the first choice for students in the country.
For high school students, one advise I will give you for free is that you should ignore middle level colleges if you want to become more marketable. Most employers prefer graduates from reputable universities as compared to the mushrooming backstreet colleges.
